I first walked into this class with a basic knowledge of cameras and photography. I had taken multimedia for two years in middle school, so I knew a few composition techniques and a little bit about how to use the camera in manual mode. I knew how to fill the frame with my subject, and how to use rule of thirds.
Over the course of a few weeks, my photos started to improve. I learned more about using the camera and technique and I slowly got more comfortable using the camera in manual mode instead of auto. I could adjust the settings quickly to capture the photo.
By the end of the class, I was taking way better photos that I thought I could. At home, I didn't have a very nice camera, and I thought that was why my photos weren't turning out like I wanted. I learned that it's not the camera that takes good photos, it's the photographer.
I'm grateful to have taken this class to improve my digital photography skills. Now, I can feel comfortable in taking nice photos. Even with something as simple as someone asking me to take a picture of them, I will feel confident in my ability to make the photo look nice. I will continue to take photos throughout high school because it's an enjoyable hobby that I have become good at.

For this assignment, we were given the task of taking words and defining them using different photos in PhotoShop. We had to use the tools we had learned on our own to create the images. What I LearnedI became more experienced with the tools in PhotoShop. I also used the gradient tool for the first time. I learned that you can use the gradient tool for more than the colors in the background. I also used it to make the orange stripes in the first photo.
For this assignment, we were given the task of coming up with 3 different puns and making a visual representation of them in PhotoShop. I made all of my puns cow themed. Pun 1Pun: Holy cow Pun 2Pun: Cowabunga Pun 3Pun: Moo-vies All PunsWhat I LearnedI learned more about merging photos and using the cut and paste tools. I learned that it can be a little tricky to brainstorm puns, but it's a fun assignment.
For this assignment, I took pictures of different things around my house and then turned them black and white. Best Photo
Original (Unedited)Other Best PhotosWhat I LearnedI learned that it doesn't matter what color something is when you turn it black and white. A lot of my photos focused on color, and when I turned them black and white they didn't look as good. Only certain things look nice without color.
For this assignment, we were given the task of going around the school and taking multiple pictures of the same person in the same spot. Then we had to put them into PhotoShop and merge the photos so it looked like there were many of the same person. Best PhotoSecond PhotoWhat I LearnedI learned that this is easier than expected. I got more experience with using the layer masks as well. I learned that you have to keep your camera still though, or else your photos won't merge as well.
For this assignment, I chose food off a list of topics given to me in class. I took different photos to satisfy the topic, then edited my favorite photo and turned it in. Best Photo
Original (Unedited)Other Best PhotosWhat I LearnedIn this assignment, I learned that you have to take pictures of nice food in order to have a good photo. If the dish doesn't have nice plating, then the photo looks kind of gross. I also learned the lighting in restaurants tends to be on the darker side, so you have to have a wide aperture and a slower shutter speed.
For this assignment, we were given the task of taking two different portraits of a classmate. One of the portraits was taken in the studio set up, with 3 lights and a white sheet as the background. The other photo was taken in front of a window, using a white bounce card to reflect the light to lift the shadows. Original PhotosFinal PortraitsWhat I learnedIn this assignment, I learned that you don't need a fancy studio to take nice portrait photos of other people. You need natural light and something to reflect the light, like a white sheet or a mirror.
For this assignment, I chose still life off a list of subjects given to me in class. I took pictures to satisfy the topic for the weekly assignment, then picked my best photo and edited it. Best Photo
Original (Unedited)Other Best PhotosWhat I LearnedIn this assignment, I learned that even if you're taking a photo of something immobile, you still have to make sure your shutter speed isn't too slow so you get crisp photos, not blurry photos. I learned more about using curves to edit all of the highlights and shadows at once and easily.
For this assignment, we were challenged to find our own PhotoShop tutorials we were interested in and use the tutorial to create the same image, or something similar. I chose 4 different tutorials to do this week. Tutorial 1 - Color PopTutorial 2 - Screen JumpTutorial 3 - PolaroidsTutorial 4 - Light BulbFor this PhotoShop, I didn't use a tutorial. I saw some of my classmates doing it but couldn't find the tutorial, so I just figured it out myself. What I LearnedI learned how to use a lot of different tools I didn't even know existed. I learned that once you familiarize yourself with the tools, PhotoShop isn't that hard to use. There are a lot of really cool things you can do with PhotoShop other than editing the colors in your photos.
For this assignment, we chose a subject from a list given to us in class. This week, I decided to take pictures of nature before all the nice flowers and leaves went away for the winter. Best Photo
Original (Unedited)Other Best PhotosWhat I LearnedIn this assignment, I learned how to edit photos of nature to make the colors pop. I learned how to use the curve tool, something I had never used before to easily edit large areas of the photo at a time.
